Policing and Neighbourhood Watch

On this page;

 Everton ward crime statistics   -   Misson crime statistics  -   Neighbourhood Watch  -  What the Police say

The Nottinghamshire Police with its headquarters in Nottingham is the force responsible for policing Misson.

As with all villages throughout North Nottinghamshire, Misson has lost its local policing. We no longer have a policeman who has a particular responsibility for Misson. All contact with the Police is via a central number in Worksop or at Harworth Police station which is only open for limited hours. PC Gregson, based at Harworth responds to Misson crime but is often seconded elsewhere. Therefore, there is insufficient local knowledge of troublemakers or criminals within the parish. Minor crime, hooliganism and theft often remains undetected. Anti-social behaviour continues too often uncorrected.

 The Police recorded crime statistics 2003/4 are as follows;

Everton Ward (includes Misson)

Domestic Burglary      - 25.3 per 1,000 households
Criminal damage          - 8.1 per 1,000 households
Theft from vehicles     - 7.8 per 1,000 households
Theft of vehicle          - 5.0 per 1,000 households
All crime                    - 76.0 per 1,000 households

Bassetlaw as a whole - 134 per 1,000 households

It is generally understood that the return of the 'village bobby' will not happen however much residents may desire it. Misson Parish awaits the new legislation with regard to Community Service Officers ( CSOs). Nottinghamshire Police Force support the appointment of Special constables and CSOs.

Aims; Establish a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Appointment of CSOs, perhaps in partnership with the other parishes of North East Bassetlaw once the legislation is in place.

Divisional Head Co-ordinator;  Terry Reynolds

The Public Meeting called by the Neighbourhood Watch Association  Wednesday 23rd February 2005, Misson Community Centre.

The purpose was to Discuss the Proposed Introduction of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to Misson Parish. This following report is made by Councillor Chris Stringer Chairman to Misson Parish Council who also chaired this meeting.

The meeting was attended by Mr. T Reynolds of Bassetlaw Neighbourhood Watch who addressed 16 residents including Councillors, Ward Councillor F Martin and the Clerk to the Parish Council.

Mr. Reynolds outlined the scheme that operates from premises at the police headquarters at Worksop. The scheme he emphasized is not however run by the police and is self funding but  with the demise of the local village bobby and the stretched resources of the police, rural villages are turning to Neighbourhood Watch Schemes to minimize crime and unsocial behaviour.

 Mr. Reynolds began by outlining the scheme and gave many examples of how crimes had been prevented and criminals apprehended with the help of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in other parishes and towns. The scheme works by co-ordinators receiving and providing relevant intelligence from and to Worksop and disseminating information to approximately 10 neighbouring properties by telephone, e-mail or by word of mouth. The scheme is merely an information gathering operation and no member is asked to confront alleged criminals or wrong doers. Residents who witness crimes should still report these to the police.

The cost of being a member is £1 per annum per household however the parish council have earmarked monies in the coming financial year to cover the full cost of the scheme. However, the council will not run the scheme.

Mr. Reynolds also said that items such as invisible markers pens, security alarms etc where available at little cost to members.  Neighbourhood Watch signs and posters will be provided.

Ward Councillor Frank Martin said the scheme was working successfully in Everton and Gringley on the Hill and he recommended it to Misson. Residents who attended the meeting expressed enthusiasm for the scheme and were given application forms to take home.

Initially for the scheme to operate we are looking for co-ordinators in  Misson Village, plus one in Newington and two in Misson Springs.

Applications forms are available by either contacting Terry Reynolds or Misson Parish Council.

What the Police Say

To Make the Most of Our Police Officers and police staff

  Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour
Reducing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour

we need to make the very best use of our dedicated and hard working police officers and police staff.

Our communities' experiences of incivility and anti-social behaviour in their local neighbourhoods contribute to their fear of crime. As a result there is widespread demand for an increased, more visible and familiar policing presence on our County's streets.

One of the ten principles underpinning our Safer Nottinghamshire for All change programme is "resources will be prioritised to deliver front line policing and we will continually review how we use resources to ensure that service standards are of the highest level."

We have made full use of the crime-fighting fund, in addition to other funds, to reach a total of 2,434.5 officers, which we will maintain and improve upon through 2003-2005. However, increasing the number of officers in Nottinghamshire is not the whole answer, we must ensure that all our police officers are deployed to maximum advantage and that they are working smarter. This will mean freeing up officers time for front-line duties, making the best use of technology and ensuring that as part of our Human Resource Strategy our staff are professionally led, highly trained and subject to modern terms and conditions of work.

In line with the Government agenda of Police Reform, we will modernise pay and pensions, adopt the national recruitment standards, continuously improve our occupational health services, promote diversity, develop skills, support leadership and introduce a new system for dealing with complaints against both police officers and police staff.

Under the new powers given to us by the Police Reform Act 2002, we will make the best use of our police staff by extending their role in a number of functions including detention officers, professional standards investigators, scenes of crime and vehicle examiners.

We are committed to increasing the membership of the Special Constabulary and are recruiting Community Support Officers. We also aim to increase the valuable contribution currently being made by local volunteers in such schemes as neighbourhood, shop and pub watch, as partnerships with local communities (through volunteering opportunities) will encourage people to become directly involved in the fight against crime.

We will also pay attention to the cost and value for money of the services that we provide. We will demonstrate a continuous drive for efficiency by meeting an annual target of efficiency gains equivalent to 2% of our budget, which we will feed through into better front-line policing.

We will develop work on activity based costing in order to improve the link between inputs and outcomes and provide the basis for the assessment of the comparative performance of our divisions. We will also work to align our corporate planning and budget planning processes more effectively so that we can plan for the delivery of medium and longer-term priorities.
