Councillors & MP's Who can be a Councillor; Becoming a Parish Councillor - Your Councillors - Voluntary Officers - Wards & County Divisions - District Councillor - County Councillor - Parliament Constituency - European Parliamentary region Your Parish Council The parish council is elected every four years. The last election took place during May 2006. The majority of parish councils in England are not divided on 'political party' lines but exist to represent local people on local issues. Decisions made by the council are decided by a simple majority vote of councillors at public meetings. Misson Parish Council meets on the first Wednesday of each month. There is no meeting in August. Misson Parish Council consists of seven elected Councillors. In addition to attending the regular monthly meetings councillors will also attend sub-committees and undertake other work on behalf of the council. An individual Councillor may be elected by the council as a representative on other bodies such as the local school governing body. A Parish councillor may be contacted directly by a member of the public with a genuine local concern. The Parish Councillor will have the right to raise that concern to the council at the monthly public meeting. Who can be a Parish Councillor? The full story (click here) To put yourself forward for election as a Parish Councillor, you must; i) Be an Elector within the parish. or ii) For the whole of twelve months preceding the date of election; a) Have lived within the parish or within three miles of it. or b) have your principle place of work within the parish. iii) be a British Subject, Citizen of the Irish Republic or a Euro National. You cannot be a Parish Councillor if the following applies; i) you are employed or paid in any other way by the council. ii) during the past five years have been declared and remain bankrupt. iii) Convicted of a criminal offence and have received a sentence greater than three months during the last five years. The above is a simple explanation of the main points to consider but you may wish to study the full document before standing. Your Councillors are there to represent you. Should there be any parish issue that you feel is not being addressed then contact a councillor and ask them to raise your concern at a parish meeting. She has served on the parish council for many years and is also a Member of the Misson Community Association. Stephen Smith (Deputy Chairman) Tel; 01302 710608 Stephen was born and has lived in Misson all his life. He is now a Stock Breeder and represents the third generation owning and working his farm that was previously in milk production. Chris Stringer (Chairman) Tel; 01302 710130 mailto:chris.stringer@btconnect.com Chris is a Pilot and is the Chief Flying Instructor for a major Flying Club and school in the region. He moved to the village in 1986 and has served on the Parish council for over 6 years. He was first elected Chairman in 2003. Prior to the parish council he served on the Village Community Association. Chris represents The N. E. Bassetlaw Forum on two community committees at Robin Hood Airport. He has assisted greatly in the development of the current parish survey, the largest consultation undertaken by the council to date. He has lived in the parish for over 25 years The parish council values the work undertaken by its wardens and voluntary officers. If you have a specialty or interest that will aid or assist the council in its day to day business and would like to help, then please contact the Clerk of the council. Parish Plan Survey Development Officer Heather Gledhill Tel; 01302 710255 Heather acts as an advisor to the Parish Plan Action Committee and is responsible for drawing up the Parish Survey for submission to the Parish Council for approval. Parish Paths Wardens; Phil and Jacky Wheeldon Tel; 01302 710689 Phil and Jacky walk the parish paths on a regular basis and report to the council on the accessibility and condition of our paths. Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator; Jayne Watson Tel; 01302 719179 Jayne acts as the central co-ordinator within Misson and ensures that newsletters and other information is readily available to residents of the parish. If you would like to play your part please contact her. District Wards and County Divisions Bassetlaw District is divided into Wards and each ward elects a District Councillor. District Councillors commonly represent a political party but may stand independently. The job is to represent your Ward at the Bassetlaw District council. Each division within Nottinghamshire elect a County Councillor. Misson is within the Misterton Division. The Misterton Division extends north from Clarborough to Misson and east from Scrooby & Ranskill to Misterton. County Councillors commonly represent a political party but may stand independently. The job is to represent you at the Nottinghamshire County council. County Councillor (Misterton Division) How your County is represented Ken Bullivant (Conservative) Tel; 01427 848337 mailto:ken.bullivant@bassetlaw.gov.uk Counties are also divided into Constituencies which elect Members of Parliament for a five year term. MP's take a seat in the House of Commons, Westminster, London. Their prime purpose is to represent you at a national and international level. Members of Parliament commonly represent a political party but may stand independently. The job is to represent you at the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster. Your MP is full time and salaried and will represent you on personal matters with regard to local and national issues. The Bassetlaw Parliamentary Constituency includes the following wards: Beckingham, Blyth, Carlton, Clayworth, Everton, Harworth, Langold, Misterton, Rampton, Ranskill, Sturton, Sutton (part), Welbeck (part), Worksop East, Worksop North, Worksop North East, Worksop North West, Worksop South and Worksop South East. Misson is within the East Midlands Region and elects six EMP's. EMP's commonly represent a political party but may stand independently. The job is to represent you at the European Parliament at Brussels and Strasburg, it would appear that they couldn't come to a decision on one place. The parliament meets alternatively in Brussels and Strasburg on a rotating basis.
In June 2004, the people of
the East Midlands Region elected the following six members to serve them in the
European Parliament. If you wish to raise an issue concerning the EU,
you may approach any or all of them. Don't be surprised if they have
no idea where Misson is.
